Kyiv is preparing to resume subway traffic across the Southern Bridge - Klitschko
The Kyiv Metro is ready to resume train service on the green line across the Southern Bridge during the yellow level of air alert. However, this will happen only after obtaining an expert opinion on the condition of the structure after the Russian strikes.
This was announced by Kyiv Mayor Vitali Klitschko following a meeting of the capital's Defense Council.
According to him, the Ministry of Communities and Territories Development has approached scientific institutes to obtain an expert assessment of the condition of the Southern Bridge. After the appropriate conclusion, the metro will be able to make a decision on restoring passenger transportation across the Dnipro.
The Defense Council also separately considered the movement of road transport across the capital's bridges. The military, law enforcement, the State Emergency Service and city services provided their proposals for organizing connections between the right and left banks, taking into account security risks.
The developed proposals are being passed by Kyiv to the central authorities. Klitschko emphasized that when introducing restrictions, the city must simultaneously take into account the need to maintain transport logistics between the two banks of the Dnipro.
The issue became particularly acute after a new series of Russian strikes on the Southern Bridge. As reported by Kurs Ukrainy, after another hit on October 2, traffic on the bridge was completely closed in both directions. Restrictions on other crossings led to significant traffic jams in the capital.
After the attacks, the operating regime of public transport also changed. Trains of the Syretsko-Pecherska metro line do not run through the open section of the Southern Bridge, and ground routes are partially rerouted through other crossings.
As early as October 1, after one of the previous strikes, specialists of the municipal enterprise "Kyivavtoshlyakhmist" did not find critical damage to the roadway part of the structure, which allowed temporarily restoring ground public transport traffic. At the same time, the structures through which the metro line passes continued to be inspected.
After a new strike on the morning of October 2, the situation had to be reconsidered again, and the Southern Bridge was completely closed to vehicular traffic.
At the meeting of the Defense Council, the overall functioning of the capital under the increased Russian attacks was also discussed. Klitschko stated that the strikes are causing damage to critical and transport infrastructure, energy facilities, residential buildings, and social institutions.
According to him, city services have to ensure the operation of Kyiv not under normal peacetime conditions, but under the constant threat of new strikes. He called on the military, rescuers, law enforcement, and city structures to coordinate decisions and openly inform residents about security restrictions.
