Polish prosecutor's office reported on the condition of the suspect in the monastery attack
31-year-old Ukrainian citizen Igor M., suspected of a knife attack on people in the Benedictine sisters' monastery in Polish Jarosław, remains in a state of psychosis. Due to his condition, investigators are still unable to question the man and conduct the necessary procedural actions with him.
This was reported by the spokesperson of the District Prosecutor's Office in Przemyśl, Małgorzata Taciuch-Kurasiewicz, in a comment to Ukrinform.
On October 1, the prosecutor's office received an updated psychiatric assessment of the suspect's condition. Experts noted a slight improvement, but it is still insufficient for the man to participate in investigative actions.
He is currently undergoing treatment and receiving medication. In about two weeks, the prosecutor's office plans to involve psychiatrists again to assess his condition.
The prosecutor's office has already prepared an indictment, but formally charging the suspect and questioning him is still impossible due to his health condition.
Earlier, psychiatrists diagnosed the man with symptoms of acute polymorphic psychotic disorder. A separate examination is to determine whether he was sane at the exact moment of the attack. This will in particular affect further criminal proceedings.
The court in Jarosław previously ordered the suspect's arrest until December 23. Given his condition, the preventive measure must be carried out in a medical facility with enhanced security.
The attack took place on the morning of September 24 on the grounds of the Benedictine monastery in Jarosław, Podkarpackie Voivodeship. According to the District Prosecutor's Office in Przemyśl, the man wounded five people.
The investigation believes he took a knife in the monastery kitchen and attacked four men and a woman. One of the victims, priest Stanisław Zbojnowicz, who tried to stop the attacker, later died in hospital.
Two other victims remained in serious condition in a hospital in Jarosław. The injured woman was hospitalized in Przeworsk, while another victim was discharged from a hospital in Przemyśl after receiving treatment.
According to the investigation, Igor M. arrived in Poland from Germany on the night of September 23 and planned to cross the Ukrainian border through the Korczowa–Krakowiec border crossing. However, the car he was traveling in did not have mandatory insurance, so the vehicle was detained and towed to Jarosław.
The prosecutor's office has already questioned border guards, witnesses of the attack, and victims. Additionally, Polish investigators intend to request international legal assistance from Ukrainian authorities. At the time of the last comment, the prosecutor's office had not yet contacted the detainee's family.
