September 2026 turned out to be quite a successful month for the cryptocurrency market. The main event was not only the continued growth of Bitcoin, but also the noticeable acceleration of many altcoins. While Bitcoin gained about 8.6% over the month, a number of alternative cryptocurrencies showed double-digit or even more than 50% returns.

The absolute leader among the large cryptocurrencies presented was Uniswap (UNI) — its value grew by about 53.2% in September. Thus, UNI outperformed Bitcoin by more than six times.

In second place was Avalanche (AVAX) with growth of about 51.3%, and third was Tezos (XTZ) — up 49.7%. Another impressive result was shown by Worldcoin (WLD), which gained about 45.8%.

It is especially interesting that strong growth was observed not only in small speculative tokens. Solana gained about 19.1%, Cardano — 25.4%, Chainlink — 26.9%, and Litecoin — 35.1%. Ethereum also outperformed Bitcoin, increasing by about 10.9%.

Even more impressive results are shown by some rankings that include a wide range of cryptocurrencies. For example, according to CryptoRank, the average return of large altcoins in September was about 27.5%, and 66 out of 86 large altcoins outperformed Bitcoin.

If we consider a broader list of cryptocurrencies, the difference becomes even more noticeable. NEAR grew by about 186.6%, and Arbitrum — by 137.1% in September. However, such results should be treated with more caution: the smaller the coin's market capitalization, the stronger its price can be influenced by individual news, speculative demand and low liquidity.

Why did altcoins grow more than Bitcoin?

September demonstrated a classic situation where, after a strong movement of Bitcoin, part of the capital begins to flow into riskier assets. Bitcoin remains the main market benchmark, but after its growth, investors begin to look for cryptocurrencies capable of showing higher returns.

At the same time, a full-fledged "altseason" could not yet be called guaranteed: Bitcoin's share in the total capitalization of the crypto market remained high. Therefore, the September growth of altcoins rather indicates an increase in risk appetite than a complete transition of the market to a phase of mass growth of alternative coins.

What does this mean for October?

September showed that demand is gradually spreading from Bitcoin to a wider range of cryptocurrencies. This is a positive signal for the market, but it also indicates increased risks: coins that grew by 40–50% or more in a month are capable of showing equally rapid corrections.

Bitcoin finished September at approximately $84k and gained about 7–9% for the month, depending on the chosen price fixation moment. At the same time, the cryptocurrency completed the third quarter with a growth of more than 40% from July to September.

Thus, the main feature of September was the transition from predominantly Bitcoin-oriented growth to a broader movement of altcoins. If this process continues in October, it is the large altcoins — primarily UNI, AVAX, DOT, LINK, SOL, and ADA — that may remain in the focus of traders. However, after such rapid growth, the probability of profit-taking and sharp corrections also increases significantly.
