Robotic turrets are already shooting down jet drones - Air Force
Air Force spokesman Yuriy Ihnat reported that air defense forces were able to shoot down jet UAVs, including “Geran-5”, from robotic turrets.
“Robotic turrets … are now being installed on bridges as well … There are already shootdowns of even jet UAVs, even “Geran-5”, from those turrets. I was also a big skeptic, I thought how is that possible. But the use of innovative technologies, artificial intelligence has eliminated human error, (improved – ed.) technical calculations. Machine vision is exactly what is used in shooting down. Artificial intelligence allows to work even against jet UAVs” , - said the Air Force spokesman.
At the same time, Ihnat added that the operating radius of these robotic turrets is limited, as the main means of shooting down is currently a machine gun.
Robotic turrets are being deployed against the backdrop of a significant increase in the number of jet drones in Russian attacks. According to President Volodymyr Zelenskyy, over the past week, Russia has used more than 1,900 strike drones against Ukraine, more than 800 of which were jet-powered. During the attack on the night of October 4, the Air Force recorded 135 enemy UAVs, including 52 jet “Shaheds”.
The day before, Zelenskyy reported that more than 12 automated combat modules have already been installed in Kyiv to counter jet drones, and another eight are planned to be deployed in the Kyiv region. These are modules for heavy machine guns. At the same time, such systems are exactly means of close-range air defense: Ihnat emphasized that, due to machine gun armament, their range remains limited.
Thus, robotic turrets are supposed to complement other means of countering high-speed drones in close proximity to objects that need to be covered. A key difference of such complexes, according to Ihnat, is the use of machine vision and artificial intelligence for tracking fast-moving targets and calculating firing.
