Musk became the largest donor to the congressional election campaign in the USA
American billionaire Elon Musk directed more than $276 million to support the Republican Party of the USA since early July 2026. These funds are intended to help Republicans retain control of Congress in the midterm elections on November 3. By the amount of known donations, Musk became the largest donor of the current election campaign.
This is reported by The New York Times citing representatives of the entrepreneur, who disclosed information about his political contributions on the eve of filing financial reports.
The largest part of the funds - $158 million - Musk gave to the Senate Leadership Fund, a political committee that supports Republican candidates for the Senate. This is one of the largest known political donations in US history. Musk's contribution exceeded the total amount raised by a similar Democratic organization for the corresponding quarter.
Another more than $76 million went to America PAC - a political committee created by Musk in 2024. The organization finances a large-scale campaign to attract voters, in particular those Republican supporters who usually do not participate in midterm elections.
According to NYT, America PAC operates in seven states with competitive Senate races and in nearly three dozen House of Representatives districts. The organization has attracted about three thousand paid canvassers, and its representatives claim to have visited about 6.5 million households.
Separately, Musk allocated $20 million to support Republicans in the House of Representatives, $10 million to the political committee of Texas Senate candidate Ken Paxton, and another $12 million to organizations supporting Republican candidates for governor and state attorney general positions.
Overall, during the 2025-2026 election cycle, Musk's political contributions to federal committees reached about $366 million. This is more than the roughly $290 million that the entrepreneur spent during the 2024 elections, when he supported the return of Donald Trump to the White House.
The large-scale funding resumed after a period of public conflict between Musk and Trump. In 2025, the entrepreneur left his job in the American administration, criticized the president's budget policy, and even allowed for the creation of a new political party. At that time, he also stated his intention to significantly reduce political spending.
However, already in July 2026, Axios reported on the resumption of America PAC's activity. The organization focused on direct work with voters, digital advertising, and mailings. This allows other committees associated with Republicans to direct more resources to television advertising.
At the same time, Musk's current participation in the election campaign differs from 2024. He much less frequently personally speaks at political events, and he has largely delegated operational management of America PAC to his advisers. Despite this, in recent weeks the entrepreneur and Trump have appeared together in public several times.
For Republicans, Musk's financial support is especially important amid the battle to retain the majority in both chambers of Congress. Dissatisfaction among some voters with high prices, the administration's economic policy, and the war with Iran creates additional difficulties for the party ahead of the vote.
At the same time, the cited amounts are based mainly on information from Musk's representatives. The US Federal Election Commission set October 15 as the deadline for filing quarterly financial reports, which will allow for refining the volume of political financing.
