In Lithuania, debris from a drone hit a moving car and damaged its door. The driver was not injured, but the incident triggered an air alert: residents of several regions were urged to take shelter, NATO scrambled fighter jets, and Kaunas Airport temporarily suspended operations.

Later, Ukraine apologized for the risks and concerns caused. Foreign Ministry spokesperson Heorhii Tykhyi suggested that the drone may have deviated from its course due to Russian electronic warfare. However, the origin of the aircraft and the causes of the incident have not yet been finally established.

Drone debris hits moving car

The incident occurred on Sunday morning, October 18, in northern Lithuania. After detecting an unknown aircraft, authorities declared an air alert in Panevėžys and Šiauliai counties.

Residents received warnings with a recommendation to immediately go to shelters. The alert lasted about an hour.

Later, suspected drone debris was found near the village of Juodžionys in Pasvalys district, near the border with Latvia.

According to Lithuanian public broadcaster LRT, fragments of the aircraft damaged the door of a car that was traveling on the road at the time.

The person behind the wheel was not injured.

Lithuanian President Gitanas Nausėda said that an object resembling a drone presumably exploded over the northern part of the country, posing a danger to the civilian population.

However, investigators are still clarifying the circumstances of the explosion, including whether it occurred in the air or after the aircraft hit an obstacle.

NATO scrambled fighter jets, but the drone was not shot down

After the appearance of the unknown object in Lithuanian airspace, NATO air policing forces were activated.

According to Reuters, two Italian Eurofighter jets operating under alliance command were scrambled on alert.

However, the aircraft were unable to visually identify the type of aerial target due to dense cloud cover. Therefore, the drone was not intercepted.

Lithuanian Defense Minister Robertas Kaunas explained that in peacetime, visual identification of the object is required before using weapons.

During the alert, Kaunas Airport suspended arrivals and departures. After the warning was lifted, its operations resumed.

A warning about a possible air threat was also briefly issued in some areas of Latvia.

Ukraine apologizes and names possible cause

Later, Ukrainian Foreign Ministry spokesperson Heorhii Tykhyi commented on the incident.

According to him, the drone may have deviated from its original route as a result of the actions of Russian electronic warfare systems during an operation against military targets on Russian territory.

This refers to electronic warfare systems that can affect the navigation and communication of drones, making them harder to control and potentially altering their flight path.

Tykhyi expressed regret over the incident and apologized for the inconvenience, risks, and concerns it may have caused.

The Ukrainian side also stated its readiness to share the necessary information with Lithuania to establish all the circumstances of the incident and continue cooperation to prevent similar cases.

Important: the Russian electronic warfare version has not yet been confirmed by the investigation. The Ukrainian Foreign Ministry's apology does not mean that the origin of the specific drone has already been officially established.

Where the drone came from: Lithuania and Poland report different data

Another question concerns the aircraft's route.

Lithuanian Defense Minister Robertas Kaunas stated that, according to preliminary data, the drone entered the country's airspace from Polish territory.

The Lithuanian side proposed a joint investigation of the incident with Warsaw.

However, a Polish Defense Ministry representative told Reuters that Polish radar systems did not confirm the object crossed the border in the direction of Lithuania.

At the same time, Polish authorities continue to cooperate with their Lithuanian counterparts.

Thus, the exact route of the drone remains unclear, as do the circumstances of its alleged deviation from course.

Why the incident raised concerns in NATO

The incident was another reminder of the risks of the consequences of the war spreading beyond Ukraine.

Drones have repeatedly violated the airspace of the Baltic states. In some cases, the Ukrainian side explained such incidents as the result of Russian electronic warfare.

However, each new case requires a separate investigation, as possible causes and flight paths may differ.

Lithuanian President Gitanas Nausėda said that such incidents show how the consequences of Russia's war against Ukraine affect the eastern flank of NATO and the European Union.

This time, there were no casualties, but debris from the aircraft damaged a civilian car, and the air alert affected residents of several regions.

Now Lithuanian specialists must determine the type and origin of the drone, reconstruct its route, and clarify the causes of its fall.

Ukraine has stated its readiness to assist in the investigation. Until it is completed, assumptions about the aircraft's affiliation and the impact of Russian electronic warfare remain preliminary versions.
