Verkhovna Rada Commissioner for Human Rights Dmytro Lubinets confirmed that a humanitarian operation involving a temporary ceasefire is scheduled for October 29 in the occupied city of Oleshky, Kherson region. Its goal will be to provide assistance to the civilian population and organize the evacuation of residents.
The ombudsman reported this on his Telegram channel on October 23.
Thus, the Ukrainian side confirmed the localized ceasefire agreement previously announced by the White House. This is not a general truce between Ukraine and Russia, but a temporary cessation of hostilities for a specific humanitarian mission.
Earlier on October 23, the White House reported that the agreement was reached through the mediation of US First Lady Melania Trump. According to the statement by the American administration, the parties agreed to temporarily halt military actions in Oleshky starting October 29 to ensure the delivery of drinking water, food and medicine, as well as to prepare the safe evacuation of civilians.
It is expected that civilian representatives of Ukraine and Russia will coordinate the provision of assistance to the population. Residents who wish to leave the city should be provided with transport and the opportunity to independently choose the direction of evacuation.
According to White House estimates, between 1,700 and 2,000 people, mostly elderly, remain in Oleshky. Among them are about 50 children. People are experiencing acute shortages of food, medicine and clean water, and the ongoing hostilities and mined roads make independent departure difficult.
Negotiations on organizing a humanitarian corridor lasted several months. As Kurs.com.ua previously reported, on October 19 Lubinets announced progress in negotiations with the Russian side. At that time, the parties were still coordinating ceasefire terms and security guarantees for civilians.
Now the date of the humanitarian operation has been set. However, the duration of the ceasefire and the exact start time of the evacuation have not yet been specified.
