In 2022, the International Weightlifting Federation banned competitions in Russia after the start of the full-scale invasion of Ukraine. Four years later, the same organization selected Moscow as the venue for the 2030 Senior World Championships.
The decision was made on October 25, 2026, by the Executive Board of the International Weightlifting Federation (IWF). The information is published on the organization's official website.
As noted by "Suspilne Sport", this is the first time since the start of the full-scale war that an international federation of an Olympic sport has granted Russia the right to host a Senior World Championship.
What the International Weightlifting Federation Decided
The IWF Executive Board determined the venues for four world championships scheduled for 2028-2030.
The 2029 Senior World Championships will be held in Ahmedabad, India, and the next tournament will be hosted by Moscow. The 2028 Youth and Junior Championships will take place in Pristina (Kosovo) and Caracas (Venezuela), respectively.
The exact dates for the competitions in the Russian capital have not yet been announced.
Notably, Moscow hosted the World Weightlifting Championships in 1975, 1980, and 1983 when it was the capital of the USSR. The last tournament took place from October 22 to 31, 1983.
Thus, if the 2030 championship is held, the world championships will return to Moscow after 47 years.
From the 2022 Ban to Russia's Return to International Sports
On March 3, 2022, the IWF officially condemned the Russian invasion of Ukraine and suspended the participation of Russian and Belarusian athletes, coaches, and technical representatives in international competitions.
At the same time, the federation banned holding tournaments under its auspices on the territory of Russia and Belarus until further notice.
Subsequently, restrictions began to be gradually eased. In 2023, athletes from these countries were allowed to return to international competitions in an individual neutral status, subject to established conditions.
At the beginning of 2026, young athletes were given the opportunity to compete, and on June 26, the IWF extended eligibility to all age categories. The requirements and participation criteria set by the federation remain in effect.
Now, changes have affected not only athlete eligibility but also the organization of competitions: Russia has received the right to host one of the main tournaments on the international weightlifting calendar.
Why the IWF Decision Attracted Attention
Four years ago, the federation itself banned international competitions in Russia. Now it has granted Moscow the right to organize a Senior World Championship.
Such a decision demonstrates a significant change in the IWF's approach to sports restrictions imposed after the start of the full-scale invasion of Ukraine.
At the same time, this applies specifically to weightlifting. The IWF decision does not automatically mean Russia's return as a host of world championships in other Olympic sports. Relevant decisions are made by the international federations of individual disciplines.
The 2030 World Championship is planned for four years from now, so the specific conditions for its holding may still be clarified. At the moment, the IWF decision to grant Moscow the right to organize the tournament has been officially confirmed.
