Strong earthquake strikes near Naples: destruction and injuries reported

On the evening of July 31, an earthquake of magnitude 4.7 occurred near Naples – the strongest in the area in recent years, according to Європейська правда.

This was reported by the Italian news agency Ansa, writes "European Pravda".

As a result of the tremors, at least 21 people were injured, two of them are in serious condition.

The main shock occurred at 19:46 local time. It was felt most strongly in Pozzuoli, but was also felt in Naples. After it, seismologists recorded about 30 aftershocks. The strongest aftershock had a magnitude of 3.8.

In Pozzuoli, people left their homes in large numbers. Many residents decided to spend the night outdoors, fearing new tremors.

On one street, part of a residential building wall collapsed, large stones fell on parked cars and damaged them.

Numerous collapses of cornices and plaster were also recorded, and cracks appeared on building facades. No deaths from the destruction were reported.

Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni is monitoring the situation. Head of the Civil Protection Department Fabio Ciciliano convened a crisis committee to coordinate rescue operations.

In the city of Pozzuoli, a temporary accommodation center with 185 places was set up for people who cannot return to their homes.

Due to the earthquake, train traffic at the Naples railway hub was also temporarily suspended, including high-speed lines. Specialists are checking the condition of the infrastructure, after which traffic will be resumed if its safety is confirmed.

In the eastern part of Turkey on the morning of July 19, an earthquake of magnitude 5.0 occurred.

And on the morning of May 20, a magnitude 5.6 earthquake hit the Battalgazi district of Turkey's Malatya province.
