Second blackout in a few days at Zaporizhzhia NPP
On August 4, the Zaporizhzhia nuclear power plant again lost external power supply. For about an hour, the plant operated on backup diesel generators, Energoatom reported.
The diesel generators supplied power to the systems necessary to maintain nuclear and radiation safety. External power supply to ZNPP was restored at 14:20.
A similar situation occurred on August 1—just a few days before the new outage.
According to Energoatom, this is the 12th blackout at the Zaporizhzhia NPP since the beginning of 2026 and the 24th since the Russian occupation of the plant. Thus, half of all cases of complete loss of external power during the occupation occurred in 2026.
The company stressed that each disruption of external power supply poses a direct threat to nuclear and radiation safety. The operation of Europe’s largest nuclear power plant relying on diesel generators remains an emergency mode and cannot be considered a safe long-term practice.
Energoatom stated that safe operation of the plant can be reliably guaranteed only after its return to full control of Ukraine and its legitimate operator.
