Temperature record broken for second consecutive day in Slovakia

For the first time in the history of meteorological observations in Slovakia, the air temperature exceeded 42 degrees. The new absolute maximum was recorded on Thursday, August 6, the Slovak Hydrometeorological Institute reported.

In the village of Dolné Plachtince, Veľký Krtíš district, the air warmed up to 42.2 degrees. Meteorologists noted that this figure surpassed all previous national records.

Above 40 degrees, the temperature also rose in other parts of the country. In Kamenica nad Hronom and Štrkovce, 41.6 degrees were recorded each, and in Turňa nad Bodvou – 41 degrees.

The previous absolute maximum was 41.4 degrees and was registered on August 5. Thus, the national record was broken for the second day in a row.

Extreme heat covered almost all of Slovakia. The temperature exceeded 30 degrees at all measuring stations located below 1000 meters above sea level. Even at Lomnický štít, where the highest mountain weather station in the country is situated, the air warmed up to over 18 degrees.

The values may be further verified by meteorologists before final recognition of the record.
