U.S. Intelligence Links Russia to Drone Incident in Leipzig

U.S. intelligence believes that a drone with explosives discovered at Germany's Leipzig/Halle Airport is likely connected to the Russian authorities.

This is reported by The Wall Street Journal, citing American officials familiar with the intelligence data.

The drone was spotted on the evening of August 4 in a secure area of the airport near a Ukrainian cargo aircraft. The airport's operations were temporarily halted due to the incident.

According to Western media, the drone carried explosive materials. German authorities consider the incident a serious security threat and are investigating possible involvement of a foreign state.

German Interior Minister Alexander Dobrinth stated that the incident signals a new level of threat. However, German authorities have not publicly assigned responsibility for the incident to Russia.

American officials, for their part, told the WSJ that existing intelligence indicates a likely connection of the drone to the Russian state. Other details that would allow independent confirmation of this assessment have not yet been disclosed.

The investigation is of particular significance due to the role of Leipzig/Halle Airport. It is one of Germany's largest cargo aviation hubs and is used, among other things, for international logistics transport.

The incident occurred against the backdrop of a rise in suspicious drone flights near Germany’s critical and military infrastructure. In February, the German parliament expanded the authorities' capabilities to counter drones after an increase in such cases.

Russia denies any involvement in the incident. The Russian embassy in Berlin called the accusations a provocation and stated the absence of evidence.

The investigation continues. At present, there is no official conclusion from German law enforcement authorities regarding who launched the drone.
