Bundeswehr recorded hundreds of drone flights over military facilities
The German armed forces have recorded several hundred suspected drone flights in the area of Bundeswehr facilities in recent years. Most reports concern single aircraft, but the German military has also observed groups of drones, said a representative of the Bundeswehr Operational Command.
The number of such incidents has increased significantly since the start of Russia's full-scale invasion of Ukraine in February 2022 and has remained at an elevated level since then. The military does not disclose the exact number of flights and details of individual cases for security reasons.
The Bundeswehr emphasizes that Germany faces various hybrid threats on a daily basis. In addition to suspicious drones, these include cyberattacks, espionage, sabotage, and disinformation operations. However, German authorities do not claim that a single country or organization is behind all recorded drone flights.
More than 700 reports since 2022
The Bundeswehr has previously disclosed the scale of the problem. In April 2026, the military reported that since 2022 it had received more than 700 reports of possible drone appearances over military facilities in Germany alone. Incidents near airports, industrial enterprises, and other critical infrastructure are recorded separately.
These figures do not contradict the current estimate of "several hundred" suspected flights: they refer to different statistical categories. The total number of sighting reports may be higher than the number of cases that are subsequently considered as probable drone flights in the zone of Bundeswehr facilities.
The German military notes that among the recorded cases there were not only individual aircraft, but also groups of drones. At the same time, the origin of most of them has not been publicly established.
Incident in Leipzig heightened concerns
Particular attention to the drone threat in Germany arose after an incident at Leipzig/Halle Airport on August 4. A drone equipped with professional explosives and a detonator was discovered there. The German Federal Public Prosecutor's Office considers the incident a serious attack on the country's transport and logistics infrastructure.
The investigation suspects that the device was intended to cause an explosion. In addition, a cargo plane, forced to go around due to the incident, collided in mid-air with an unknown object that may have been another unmanned system. The investigation is being conducted by the German Federal Criminal Police Office.
The Federal Public Prosecutor's Office has not yet publicly named the perpetrators or masterminds of the possible attack. Therefore, there are currently no grounds to link this specific episode to Russia as an established fact.
Germany strengthens drone defense
Against the backdrop of the increasing number of such incidents, the Bundeswehr is expanding units and technical capabilities for detecting and intercepting drones. The Luftwaffe's first rapid counter-small drone unit entered service in April 2025, and from July 2026 all branches of the armed forces and organizational structures of the Bundeswehr are to have their own rapid response teams.
For detection, sensors and special software are used, and for neutralization, various means can be employed—from electronic warfare systems to interceptor drones and devices with nets. The military deliberately does not disclose some of its capabilities.
The Bundeswehr is also studying the experience of Ukraine. German military officials explicitly state that the daily use of drones in the Russo-Ukrainian war provides important practical knowledge for creating a defense system for military facilities and critical infrastructure in Germany.
