Dollar falls sharply on interbank market: NBU lowers official rate for August 13
For Thursday, August 13, the National Bank set the following official exchange rates: - US dollar – 44.7128 UAH (-0.1532 UAH from the official rate for Wednesday, August 12); - euro – 51.6191 UAH (-0.1406 UAH from the official rate for Wednesday, August 12).
Rates were set at 16:00 on August 12 and reflect the following trends:
1. Immediately after the start of trading on the interbank foreign exchange market, quotes went up and within 4 minutes reached the maximum daily level of 44.84 UAH on the bid side, but there were no deals at such prices. Seeing that there were no buyers at current prices, sellers began to lower quotes. The average deal price at 12:00 was 44.7752 UAH – 13 kopecks lower than yesterday. At 13:00 the National Bank entered the market: by that time quotes had dropped to 44.70 UAH on the bid side. With NBU participation the decline accelerated, and by 15:00 the dollar had fallen to 44.612 UAH on the bid side. Therefore, the National Bank lowered the official dollar rate for Thursday, August 13 by 15.3 kopecks.
2. The euro on the international FOREX market in the first half of Wednesday traded in a narrow range of 1.1532-1.1549 dollars, but at 15:30 sharply went up after the release of US inflation data. At the time of fixing, the euro was sold at 1.15445 – 8 points higher than on Tuesday (1.15365 dollars). The growth on FOREX did not significantly affect the euro price in Ukraine. Therefore, following the official dollar rate, the NBU lowered the official euro rate by 14 kopecks.
On the cash market today, prices changed depending on the region: in the capital, the dollar slightly rose over the day, in Kharkiv, Dnipro and Lviv it fell by 2 kopecks, and in Odesa it remained at the same level. If yesterday evening in the capital the dollar was sold at 44.86 UAH, by this evening its price rose to 44.88 UAH. The cash market no longer reacts as sensitively to what happens on the interbank; as autumn approaches, it begins to live its own life.
