The SBI found the black box of the MiG-29 that crashed in Odesa region

The State Bureau of Investigation (SBI) located the flight recorder of the MiG-29 fighter jet that crashed on August 10 in Odesa region during a combat mission. The obtained data should help determine the causes of the aviation accident.

The SBI reported that the so-called black box suffered thermal damage from the fire. Specialists are now working to restore it and are trying to retrieve information about the final minutes of the flight.

The investigation is considering several possible causes of the crash, but none of the versions has been definitively confirmed yet. In particular, experts are checking the technical condition of the missile that the pilot launched at a Russian drone, as well as its suitability for use at the time of launch.

In addition, investigators are determining whether the rules for preparing the aircraft for flight, performing the combat mission, and operating the aircraft were followed. To this end, the wreckage of the MiG-29, materials from the accident site, and testimonies of military personnel are being examined.

The fighter jet crashed on the evening of August 10. According to preliminary information from the SBI, the MiG-29 was performing a combat mission to destroy Russian drones when an abnormal situation occurred. The plane caught fire, after which the pilot lost control. The pilot managed to eject, and his life is not in danger.

A criminal case has been opened over the crash under Part 2 of Article 416 of the Criminal Code of Ukraine — violation of flight rules or preparations for them, as well as aircraft operation rules, causing a catastrophe. The pre-trial investigation is ongoing.

The SBI emphasizes that conclusions about the causes of the incident will be made after studying all collected materials, including information from the recovered flight recorder.
