Beach evacuated in Romania after fragments of a military drone discovered

A beach in the Saturn resort on Romania’s Black Sea coast was evacuated after fragments believed to belong to a military drone were found among holidaymakers.

The incident occurred in the midst of the tourist season. After the suspicious debris was spotted, people were asked to leave the beach area to rule out any possible threat. Experts are now determining the origin of the found elements and the circumstances of their appearance on the shore.

There is still no official confirmation as to which state or military structure the drone belonged to. Therefore, linking the found fragments to Russia or Ukraine before the examination is completed would be premature.

Similar finds have already been recorded on the Romanian coast in 2026. In February, drone fragments were washed ashore several times on beaches in the Mamaia and Costinești areas. At least some of that debris was later linked not to combat actions but to aerial targets destroyed over the sea during international military exercises at the Capu Midia range. The Romanian Ministry of Defence reported at the time that those drone targets did not carry explosives.

However, real combat Russian drones also fell on Romanian territory. For instance, after the incident in Galați in May, specialists from the Romanian Ministry of Defence established that the discovered device was a Russian Geran-2 kamikaze drone.

A particularly serious situation on the Black Sea coast occurred on 5 June. A naval drone exploded in the port of Constanța, after which the authorities began evacuating holidaymakers from the beaches as a precaution. Around 400 people were moved from the Mangalia – Saturn – Venus – Cap Aurora area alone, and more than a thousand holidaymakers were temporarily evacuated from the entire Romanian coast.

Later, Romanian President Nicușor Dan said that the naval drone that exploded then belonged to Ukraine and was part of an operation against Russia. According to him, the Ukrainian military had lost control of several such devices in the Black Sea.

The current find in Saturn is still being treated as a separate incident. Until the results of the technical examination are available, it is impossible to establish whether the discovered object is part of a combat drone, a training target or another military device.
