In Poltava region, a man who shot at police officers was detained

In Kremenchuk, Poltava region, law enforcement officers detained a man who opened fire on police from the window of a multi-story building. As a result of the shooting, he hit two police officers, reported the Main Directorate of the National Police in Poltava region.

The incident occurred at night when law enforcement officers were responding to a call about a conflict in one of the city's establishments. While the police were working, an unknown person began shooting in their direction from the window of a nearby multi-story building.

Operatives identified the apartment from which the shots were fired, and then the identity of the shooter. He turned out to be a 38-year-old local resident who had previously had problems with the law — he was prosecuted for poaching and theft.

The detention was carried out with the support of special police forces. During an urgent search of the apartment, law enforcement officers discovered and seized a partially disassembled pneumatic pistol. In the courtyard of the building, they also found a gas cylinder and a magazine, which the man, according to the investigation, had thrown out of the window in an attempt to get rid of material evidence.

A medical examination showed that during the shooting the man was under the influence of drugs. He was detained under Article 208 of the Criminal Procedure Code of Ukraine and placed in a temporary detention facility.

Investigators notified the suspect of suspicion under Part 2 of Article 345 of the Criminal Code of Ukraine — threat or violence against a law enforcement officer in connection with the performance of his official duties.

The article's sanction provides for restriction of liberty for up to five years or imprisonment for the same term. The pre-trial investigation is ongoing.
