Stripe acquires OpenRouter in major AI market deal
Fintech company Stripe has agreed to acquire OpenRouter, a fast-growing platform that provides developers with a single access point to hundreds of artificial intelligence models. The deal is valued at over $7 billion, Bloomberg reports.
For Stripe, this will be one of its largest acquisitions and a notable step beyond its traditional payments business. OpenRouter essentially acts as an intermediary between developers and AI model creators, allowing solutions from OpenAI, Anthropic, and other companies to be used through a single interface.
The platform helps developers compare models, switch between them, and choose the most suitable option based on price, speed, and features. This approach is becoming increasingly in demand as companies begin to use multiple artificial intelligence models simultaneously instead of tying themselves to a single provider.
Exact deal estimates vary by source. Bloomberg reports a figure of more than $7 billion, while Axios values the agreement at more than $8 billion, payable in cash and stock. The companies have not yet publicly disclosed the detailed financial terms of the deal.
Back in July, it was reported that Stripe was in talks to buy OpenRouter for approximately $10 billion. At that time, the agreement had not yet been concluded, and it was possible that other potential buyers might emerge. The new agreement means the deal is moving to the next stage.
Stripe's interest in OpenRouter is particularly notable against the backdrop of the startup's rapid growth in valuation. In May 2026, OpenRouter raised $113 million in a Series B round and was valued at approximately $1.3 billion. Investors in the company include CapitalG, Menlo Ventures, Andreessen Horowitz, NVentures, and a number of major technology companies.
Thus, the sale price could exceed the valuation OpenRouter received just a few months ago by more than five times.
Stripe and OpenRouter had already been closely cooperating prior to the deal. In January, Stripe reported that OpenRouter was using its infrastructure for payment acceptance, invoicing, tax calculation, and fraud prevention. At that time, more than 5 million developers were using the OpenRouter platform.
Later, the companies deepened their integration: developers were able to create OpenRouter accounts and connect payment directly through Stripe's tools.
The acquisition will allow Stripe to occupy a more prominent position in the artificial intelligence market infrastructure. The company already processes payments for many major AI developers, and acquisition of OpenRouter will give it direct access to the system through which developers select and pay for various models.
In recent years, Stripe has been actively expanding its business beyond traditional payment processing. The company is developing tools for subscriptions and usage-based billing, infrastructure for stablecoins, and solutions for AI-agent commerce.
