Tusk urged those who attacked Ukrainian children to surrender to police

Prime Minister of Poland Donald Tusk addressed the alleged participants in the attack on two Ukrainian children in Bydgoszcz. He urged them to voluntarily report to the police and stated that otherwise law enforcement officers will find them by the end of the week.

The incident occurred on August 14 in a park near the railway station. According to data from the Consulate General of Ukraine in Gdańsk, a 14-year-old girl and her 12-year-old brother faced aggression from a man and a woman. Diplomats reported that the adults insulted the children and threatened them, after which the conflict escalated into physical violence. The children's toy drone was also broken, and the boy received scratches.

The consulate links the aggression to the fact that the brother and sister were speaking to each other in Ukrainian. The police specified that initially the adults made a remark to the children because of the use of the drone. According to the children's testimonies, during the subsequent conflict, their nationality was also brought up.

The police are establishing the identities of the man and the woman. Law enforcement officers are considering, among other things, possible insult based on nationality and destruction of property. The final legal qualification of the incident will be determined after the completion of the necessary procedural actions.

Commenting on the incident on August 18 before a government meeting, Tusk stated that attacks on children are unacceptable and harm Poland. The Prime Minister emphasized that Poles traditionally pride themselves on their attitude towards both their own children and the children of foreigners who have found refuge in the country.

The Ukrainian consulate is in contact with the mother of the victims and has provided the family with consular and legal assistance. The children's physical health is not in danger, but after the incident they experienced severe emotional stress.
