Trump confirms the termination of the negotiation track with Iran

US President Donald Trump stated that Washington is currently not engaged in negotiations with Iran and no new negotiations are planned. The American leader wrote this on August 18 on his social network Truth Social.

The statement came after the end of a 60-day period, during which the US and Iran were supposed to try to agree on a final settlement of the conflict. This deadline expired on August 17, with the parties not announcing the achievement of a new agreement or the extension of the negotiation period.

The memorandum between Washington and Tehran was signed on June 17. It provided for the cessation of hostilities and the creation of a basis for further negotiations, including on Iran's nuclear program and the situation in the Strait of Hormuz. However, the agreements were repeatedly violated, and in July hostilities resumed. The American administration stated that since July 7, US armed forces had once again struck targets in Iran after attacks on commercial vessels.

The day before, Trump also indicated that Washington does not intend to seek an extension of the June memorandum. He said that the main US demand is guarantees that Iran will not acquire nuclear weapons. Earlier, the president said he was ready to continue diplomatic contacts if they lead to an agreement meeting this condition.

At the same time, Trump said that the American naval blockade of Iran remains in place. He also claims that the Strait of Hormuz is open to shipping and cleared of mines. However, Tehran gives a different assessment of the situation: Iranian Parliament Speaker Mohammad Bagher Ghalibaf said that full traffic through the strait will not be restored until the US meets the demands of the Iranian side. Among them are the lifting of the blockade, the removal of oil sanctions, and the unfreezing of Iranian assets.

Thus, the publicly announced diplomatic track between Washington and Tehran is currently halted. At the same time, mediation efforts continue: Iran is holding separate talks with Oman on shipping through the Strait of Hormuz, and Turkey has called on the US and Iran to return to a diplomatic settlement.
