Romanian President Accuses Russia of Escalation After Sea Drone Incident
Romanian President Nicușor Dan condemned the escalation of incidents in the Black Sea, for which he blames the Russian Federation. The statement followed the interception of a sea drone by Romanian military forces in close proximity to the country's gas infrastructure.
The incident occurred on Thursday, August 20, in Romania's exclusive economic zone near the Neptun Alpha platform, approximately 80 nautical miles east of Constanța. The Romanian Ministry of National Defense reported that two F-16 fighter jets were scrambled to intercept. One of the aircraft opened fire on the sea drone with its onboard cannon and hit it.
The drone was spotted by a commercial vessel at approximately 06:28. After its detection, a coast guard ship with a team of explosive ordnance disposal specialists from the Romanian Naval Forces was dispatched to the area.
The Ministry of National Defense later clarified the circumstances of the operation. Analysis of data from the F-16 tracking systems and information obtained by the crew of the ship that arrived on scene indicated that it was a single sea drone. The fighter's fire damaged the device but did not destroy it completely.
The drone was ultimately neutralized by military EOD specialists after they reached it. Examination confirmed that the device carried explosives. The operation ended without additional incident.
Commenting on the events, Nicușor Dan spoke of an increase in dangerous incidents and condemned Russia's actions. The Romanian president linked the regional events to Russia's ongoing aggression against Ukraine and stressed the need to protect the country's citizens and critical infrastructure.
However, the official Romanian Ministry of National Defense statement on the sea drone of August 20 does not determine its origin. Thus, Dan's statement about Russia's responsibility refers to the broader escalation and series of war-related incidents, while the military in the published statement did not identify the ownership of the specific drone.
The situation around Romania's energy infrastructure in the Black Sea had already escalated in early August. On August 11, military divers destroyed two Gerbera-type drones near the Neptun Deep area. The Ukrainian side informed Bucharest at the time that the drones did not belong to Ukraine, and the Chief of the Romanian Naval Forces Staff, Mihai Panait, subsequently stated that the discovered drones were of Russian origin.
According to the Romanian Ministry of National Defense, since the beginning of the full-scale war, the ministry has recorded 42 instances of unauthorized drone penetration into the country's airspace or maritime space. In 2026, there were 24 such episodes, and four drones were shot down by the military.
