Zelensky invited Hungarian prime minister to talks in Kyiv

President of Ukraine Volodymyr Zelensky invited Prime Minister of Hungary Peter Magyar to visit Kyiv. This is stated in a congratulatory letter from the Ukrainian president on the occasion of St. Stephen's Day, published by the Embassy of Ukraine in Budapest.

Zelensky congratulated Magyar and the Hungarian people on the country's main state holiday, which is celebrated on August 20 and is associated with the founding of the Hungarian state and the first king of Hungary, St. Stephen.

The president noted the importance of relations between the two neighboring states and expressed readiness to continue direct dialogue with the leadership of Hungary.

In particular, Zelensky said he would be glad to welcome the Hungarian prime minister in the Ukrainian capital. Thus, Kyiv once again publicly proposed holding full-fledged bilateral talks between the leaders of the two countries in Ukraine.

Volodymyr Zelensky and Peter Magyar already met in June on the sidelines of the European Union summit. Then the Hungarian prime minister said he would prefer to hold separate talks in Berehove, Zakarpattia Oblast. The Ukrainian side considered other options, among which Kyiv was mentioned.

Peter Magyar became head of the Hungarian government in spring 2026 after his political force won the parliamentary elections. On August 20, already as prime minister, he spoke at state celebrations in Budapest on the occasion of St. Stephen's Day.

The letter published by the Ukrainian embassy does not specify a concrete date for Magyar's possible arrival in Kyiv. Therefore, for now it is about an invitation from Zelensky, not an already agreed visit.
