"Coalition of the Willing" to meet again to discuss aid to Ukraine
Leaders of the "coalition of the willing" supporting Ukraine will hold a new meeting on Monday, August 24 — Ukraine's Independence Day. The meeting will take place in a hybrid format, with French President Emmanuel Macron, German Chancellor Friedrich Merz, and British Prime Minister Andy Burnham as co-chairs.
The upcoming meeting was reported by Le Figaro citing the Élysée Palace. The meeting is scheduled for 13:00 Paris time, or 14:00 Kyiv time.
Macron will join the talks via video link. Some other participants will be in Kyiv, where foreign leaders and representatives of international organizations will attend events marking the 35th anniversary of Ukraine's independence.
According to the French side, about ten meeting participants are expected in the Ukrainian capital. Among them will be President of the European Council António Costa.
NATO has also confirmed the meeting. The Alliance will be represented by Deputy Secretary General Radmila Shekerinska, who will join remotely.
The detailed agenda of the talks has not been officially disclosed yet. It is known that the meeting will focus on further support for Ukraine. At previous meetings, the main areas of the coalition's work were military aid to Kyiv, increasing pressure on Russia, and preparing long-term security guarantees.
Previous meeting held in Paris
The last "coalition of the willing" summit took place on July 13 in Paris. Participants agreed to hold the next meeting in Ukraine.
Following the July summit, the Élysée Palace reported further planning of security guarantees, which should ensure lasting peace and reduce the risk of new Russian aggression.
The partners' plan includes several main areas. First, long-term military support for the Armed Forces of Ukraine. Second, the creation of so-called security assurance forces that can operate on land, in the air, and at sea after a ceasefire is achieved.
Such a mission should have a defensive character and help restore the capabilities of the Ukrainian Defense Forces. Among its potential tasks were also creating conditions for resuming normal air and maritime traffic.
The third area provides for pre-agreed military, economic, and political measures in case Russia attacks Ukraine again after the cessation of hostilities.
The "coalition of the willing" brings together about 35 states that coordinate support for Ukraine and work on future security guarantees. The United Kingdom and France play a leading role in this initiative, and Germany became one of its permanent co-chairs in 2026.
The August 24 meeting will be Andy Burnham's first as British prime minister and coalition co-chair.
