Almost 500 locomotives damaged in Ukraine since invasion began

Since the start of the full-scale invasion, Russian strikes have damaged 492 locomotives and 249 railway cars in Ukraine. Since the beginning of 2026 alone, Russia has attacked Ukrainian railways 1,534 times.

These figures were provided by Mykola Kalashnyk, Ukraine's Minister of Restoration, Infrastructure, and Transport.

Russian attacks cause not only damage to rolling stock and infrastructure, but also casualties among railway workers. Since the start of the full-scale war, 52 employees of Ukrzaliznytsia have been killed while performing their professional duties, and another 317 have been wounded.

One of the latest attacks was the strike on August 23 on the Lozova - Kharkiv electric train in Kharkiv region. Due to the attack threat, the train was stopped in advance, and most passengers and train crew moved to a safe distance from the railway infrastructure.

However, some people remained near the train. As a result of the Russian drone strike, a female passenger was killed and four more people were wounded.

Russian troops later attacked the electric train again, when rescuers were already working at the scene. During the second strike, there were no new casualties.

On the same day, a Russian jet-powered "Shahed" drone hit the locomotive of a passenger train in Odesa region. The train had also been stopped in advance, and 593 passengers, including 15 children, were evacuated. After the first hit, Russia attacked the locomotive again, but no one was hurt.
