Russian attack destroys Red Cross warehouse in Kherson

A warehouse of the Ukrainian Red Cross was seriously damaged as a result of a Russian drone attack in Kherson. The fire destroyed and damaged humanitarian supplies worth almost 28 million hryvnias, including property intended for preparing the city for the autumn-winter period and helping people after shelling.

This was reported by the Ukrainian Red Cross. The attack occurred on the evening of August 23, after which a fire broke out at the warehouse.

A significant part of the lost property consisted of supplies that were to be used for rapid response to the consequences of Russian strikes. Among them were materials for temporary covering of damaged windows, roofs and other elements of buildings.

Such materials are used by humanitarian teams immediately after shelling when damaged buildings need to be quickly protected from rain, wind and cold before full repair.

In addition, the fire destroyed or damaged medical supplies, blankets and hygiene kits. The warehouse contained equipment for providing water and electricity to the population, as well as other humanitarian aid.

The loss of supplies is especially sensitive on the eve of autumn and winter. Some of the property had been accumulated in advance to help residents of Kherson and the region in case of damage to housing and critical infrastructure during Russian attacks.

The total value of the destroyed and damaged supplies is estimated by the Ukrainian Red Cross at almost 28 million hryvnias.

There were no casualties among the organization's staff and volunteers as a result of the attack.

The Ukrainian Red Cross stated that the loss of the warehouse and humanitarian supplies will not stop the organization's work in the region. Mobile teams will continue to travel to the sites of Russian strikes and provide assistance to local residents.

Kherson and other settlements on the right bank of the region remain under intense attacks by Russian drones. According to the Kherson Regional Military Administration, from August 17 to 23 alone, Russian forces used more than 6,400 drones against the region's communities. Almost 2,000 cases of UAV use were directly in the Kherson community.

During this period, Ukrainian units destroyed or suppressed more than 6,000 drones—about 93% of the total number of targets recorded. However, some drones continue to hit civilian and infrastructure objects.

A few days before the fire at the Red Cross warehouse, Russian drones also attacked a commercial facility in the Central district of Kherson. As a result of the strike, a large-scale fire broke out, and the premises and property of the shopping center were almost completely burned out.

Constant strikes on Kherson complicate not only the work of businesses and municipal infrastructure, but also the activities of humanitarian organizations, which have to simultaneously respond to the consequences of attacks and restore destroyed aid supplies.
