US Senator announces timeline for new sanctions against Russia

Democratic Senator Richard Blumenthal, co-author of the bill on sanctions against Russia, hopes for the final adoption of the document in September 2026. He said this during a conversation with journalists in Kyiv, according to Європейська правда.

Blumenthal claims that the bill has strong support among Republicans.

"It has very strong support from Republicans. I hope it will receive the same support from Democrats as it did in the Senate", – he said.

According to him, the bill will be "extremely effective – both in terms of secondary sanctions and in terms of direct sanctions against oligarchs, financial institutions, related industries and the shadow fleet."

The senator noted that the key factor is ensuring compliance with sanctions and the position of US President Donald Trump.

Blumenthal said that the delay in adoption was due to the need to get the "green light" from the White House after lengthy negotiations with the US trade representative and the leadership of both parties.

He also expressed hope for the final adoption of the document in September 2026.

"I hope it will happen in September. The House of Representatives resumes work in September, and I am in close contact with the House leadership, and I very much hope that there will be the determination to pass it", – he added.

Recall that the US Senate on August 7 approved by 86 votes "for" the draft on sanctions against the Russian Federation, co-authored by the late Republican Senator Lindsey Graham and Democrat Richard Blumenthal. It concerns "punitive" tariffs for countries importing Russian energy resources.

Further consideration in the House of Representatives and adoption is possible no earlier than September – until August 31, legislators go on break.

US President Donald Trump has repeatedly expressed the wish that the draft include provisions regarding Iran, but signaled that he is ready to sign it out of respect for the late Graham.
