Another earthquake registered in Zakarpattia region

In Zakarpattia region on the evening of August 26, an earthquake of magnitude 1.7 on the Richter scale was registered. The focus was in Rakhiv district at a depth of 7 kilometers. Specialists classified the event as imperceptible.

This was reported by the Main Center for Special Control.

The earthquake occurred at 18:44:53 Kyiv time. The source coordinates were 48.09 degrees north latitude and 24.36 degrees east longitude.

The magnitude was 1.7, and the depth of the focus was 7 kilometers. Special seismological equipment registered the underground tremors.

According to the classification of the Main Center for Special Control, the earthquake is considered imperceptible. That means at this magnitude, vibrations are detected by instruments, but people usually do not feel them.

No information about any consequences or damage related to this seismic event has been received.

Weak earthquakes are regularly recorded in Zakarpattia

The current earthquake was far from the first weak seismic event in Zakarpattia region in 2026.

Thus, on June 18, the Center for Special Control registered an earthquake of magnitude 1.6 in the region. Its focus was at a depth of 8 kilometers, and it was also classified as imperceptible.

A few days earlier, on June 15, an earthquake of magnitude 1.8 at a depth of 10 kilometers occurred in Zakarpattia.

On May 12 in Khust district, specialists recorded an earthquake of magnitude 1.7. Its focus was at a depth of 9 kilometers. Also on May 8, an earthquake of magnitude 2.0 at a depth of about 3 kilometers occurred near Vynohradiv.

In February, a tremor of magnitude 1.7 was also recorded in Zakarpattia region — its epicenter was near Mukachevo, and the focus was at a depth of 7 kilometers.

All these events were classified by specialists as imperceptible. Thus, the earthquake of August 26 fits into the series of weak seismic events recorded in the region during the year.

The Main Center for Special Control carries out continuous monitoring of geophysical phenomena on the territory of Ukraine and in other regions of the world. Thanks to the sensitivity of seismic stations, specialists can record even very weak underground tremors that humans cannot feel.

The Center also invites residents to report their observations if they felt an earthquake. Such reports are used by specialists as additional information to refine the parameters of the seismic event.
