Stockholm to allocate additional funds for air defense and ammunition to Ukraine
Sweden will provide Ukraine with additional military aid worth more than 270 million Swedish kronor — about $28.3 million. The funds will be transferred to several international funds and multilateral initiatives, primarily to strengthen Ukrainian air defense.
The Swedish government announced the relevant decision on August 27. The country's armed forces have been instructed to transfer financial contributions to mechanisms through which the necessary weapons and military equipment are purchased for Ukraine.
The largest separately indicated part of the new funding — $14 million, or about 133 million Swedish kronor — will be directed to the American Prioritised Ukraine Requirements List (PURL) initiative, which is managed by NATO.
Within PURL, the United States forms packages of priority American weapons for Ukraine, and allies and partner countries pay for their procurement. Such packages include, in particular, modern air defense systems and ammunition.
Swedish Defense Minister Paul Johnson noted that further financing of PURL allows Ukraine to receive American weapons faster, which are among the most urgent needs of the Ukrainian army.
“This concerns, for example, air defense and ammunition, which allow Ukraine to continue defending against Russian attacks,” he stated.
This is already Sweden's fifth contribution to the PURL mechanism. After the new payment, the total volume of Swedish financing for this initiative will reach $552 million.
Earlier, in June, Stockholm announced the allocation of an additional $108 million to PURL. The Swedish government also emphasized at the time that through this mechanism Ukraine gains access, among other things, to advanced American air defense systems and ammunition.
In total, since the beginning of the full-scale Russian invasion, Sweden has provided Ukraine with military aid worth approximately 128 billion Swedish kronor. For 2026–2027, Stockholm has budgeted a framework of military support to Ukraine in the amount of 80 billion kronor — 40 billion kronor annually.
