Drones struck one of Russia's largest oil refineries; two fire outbreaks reported (Updated)
On the morning of August 28, after a drone attack, a fire broke out at the Yaroslavl Oil Refinery "Slavneft-YANOS", one of the five largest refineries in Russia. OSINT analyst Astra confirmed two fire outbreaks on the plant's territory based on eyewitness videos. Ukrainian company Fire Point claimed the plant was attacked by long-range drones FP-1.
According to Astra, video of the strike's aftermath was filmed from the Dyadkovo neighborhood in Yaroslavl. Geolocation of the footage showed that both fire outbreaks were located within the "Slavneft-YANOS" refinery.
Fire Point reported that the strike on the facility was carried out by Ukrainian FP-1 drones. Monitoring channel Exilenova+ also published video of a large-scale fire at the plant and reported that it continued past 08:00.
"Slavneft-YANOS" refines about 15 million tons of oil per year and is among the top five Russian refineries. The plant produces Euro-5 gasoline and diesel fuel, aviation kerosene, jet fuel, lubricants, bitumen, liquefied gases, and fuel oil.
The plant is the main refining asset of "Slavneft", with 99.7% of shares equally controlled by "Rosneft" and "Gazprom".
Russian authorities initially did not report damage to the refinery. Yaroslavl Region Governor Mikhail Evraev issued a drone alert and the need to eliminate the consequences of the attack, without naming the damaged facilities.
Due to the attack, traffic was partially blocked in Yaroslavl towards Moscow, and city and intermunicipal transport routes were changed. Additionally, on August 28, kindergartens No. 98 and No. 28 are closed; children have been relocated to other institutions.
The Yaroslavl refinery has repeatedly been a target of Ukrainian attacks. According to Astra, in 2026 alone, fires at the plant after strikes or drone attacks were recorded on March 28, April 26, May 8 and 22, July 6 and 16, and August 6.
The nighttime attack also affected other regions of Russia. Residents of Engels in Saratov Region reported multiple explosions and a large number of drones to Astra throughout the night. Exilenova+ also published footage of Russian air defense operating near Engels and Saratov. There are currently no confirmed data on affected targets there.
Drones also attacked Moscow Region. Governor Andrei Vorobyov reported that in Pavlovsky Posad one of the drones hit a "Magnit" store. The blast wave also damaged a nearby clinic.
In the adult department of the medical facility, 46 windows were blown out, with the greatest damage in two offices. The children's department was not affected, and the clinic continued operations, with only the physiotherapy office temporarily closed. Moscow Region authorities did not report any casualties.
Moscow Mayor Sergei Sobyanin reported the destruction of two drones that were allegedly heading towards the Russian capital. An elevated threat level due to the attack was also announced in Vladimir and Ivanovo Regions and in the southeast of Moscow Region.
The total number of drones used in the August 28 attack has not been reported yet.
