Restoration of the main building of "Okhmatdyt" completed in Kyiv
In Kyiv, capital repairs of the modern therapeutic and diagnostic building of the National Children's Specialized Hospital "Okhmatdyt", damaged by a Russian missile strike on July 8, 2024, have been completed. The actual cost of the completed construction work amounted to about UAH 272 million.
On August 28, representatives of the hospital, the Ministry of Health, and the supervisory board of the "Okhmatdyt – Healthy Childhood" charitable foundation reported the completion of the restoration.
The work was financed by donations received after the Russian strike. At that time, citizens, companies, and other donors transferred funds for the hospital's restoration.
About UAH 272 million spent on restoration
The capital repair contractor was the company "Riola-Module LTD". The initial expected procurement cost was about UAH 367.4 million, but the contractor's offer was significantly lower. The actual cost of completed construction work ultimately amounted to about UAH 272 million.
The project included restoration of damaged building structures, roof, and facade, replacement of windows and doors, repair of interior premises and utility networks. The work also covered heating, ventilation, water supply, electrical supply, medical gases, fire alarm, and other communications.
After the missile strike, the modern building did not cease operations completely. Most departments from other damaged buildings of the hospital complex were temporarily moved there, so repairs were carried out concurrently with provision of medical care to children.
The main construction and finishing work was completed approximately 26 months after the Russian strike. However, the hospital still plans to carry out a number of current works costing about UAH 9 million.
Restoration of the entire complex continues
Completion of repair of the therapeutic and diagnostic building does not mean the end of restoration of the entire "Okhmatdyt". The Russian attack on July 8, 2024, damaged several buildings of the hospital, including the old surgical, toxicological, and administrative buildings, as well as energy infrastructure.
The next step will be restoration of the transformer substation. Separately, a large-scale project is being prepared for the old surgical building. According to the hospital's general director, Alexander Urin, the existing building is planned to be demolished, and a new building will be constructed on its site.
The concept of the new surgical complex has already been agreed. The project includes 13 departments, eight operating rooms, an intensive care unit, a radiation therapy center, a burn center, and a large shelter where surgeries can be performed if necessary. Currently, preparation of project documentation continues with the assistance of the World Bank.
During the Russian strike on July 8, 2024, one of the missiles hit the "Okhmatdyt" complex. The toxicology building was destroyed and other buildings of the country's largest children's hospital were severely damaged. Despite the consequences of the attack and subsequent reconstruction, the medical facility continued to accept patients.
