Kremlin announces continued strikes on Kyiv and a pause in negotiations

Russian presidential press secretary Dmitry Peskov said Russian forces continue to systematically strike Kyiv. At the same time, the Kremlin spokesman acknowledged a lack of progress in peace talks with Ukraine, saying the process is currently in a ‘deep pause’.

Peskov told journalists this on August 28, his words were reported by the Russian state agency TASS.

“Strikes on Kyiv continue, continue systematically, purposefully,” — the Kremlin representative said.

At the same time, Peskov repeated Moscow's official position that the Russian military allegedly attacks exclusively “military and near-military infrastructure.”

Ukrainian authorities have repeatedly reported Russian missiles and drones hitting residential buildings, enterprises and critical infrastructure facilities. During the attacks on August 28 alone, damage and fires were recorded in several regions of Ukraine.

Kremlin acknowledged no progress in talks

Separately, Peskov commented on the prospects of negotiations to end the war.

“The issue of peace talks: yes, this topic is currently deeply on pause, there are no new ideas,” — he said.

The Kremlin representative also claims that the Ukrainian side knows Moscow's demands, but Kyiv allegedly does not want to discuss a peaceful settlement.

“The Ukrainian side knows our demands perfectly well. They do not want to discuss this peacefully,” — Peskov said.

He used this to explain the continuation of Russia's military operation against Ukraine. At the same time, Peskov did not report any new Russian proposals that could lead to a cessation of hostilities.

Statement comes after new Moscow-Washington contacts

The Kremlin representative’s words came amid a series of contacts between US and Russian officials in Moscow. This week, CIA Director John Ratcliffe visited the Russian capital and held a number of meetings with Russian officials.

President of Ukraine Volodymyr Zelenskyy said on August 28 that after these contacts, the American side provided Kyiv with information about the meetings. According to him, Ukraine values coordination with Washington and the “necessary tone of conversation with Russia.”

Despite diplomatic contacts, Russian air attacks have not stopped. According to the Ukrainian Air Force, on the afternoon of August 28 alone Russia attacked Ukraine with seven S8000 “Banderol” and 96 strike drones, most of which were directed toward Kyiv. More than 70 aircraft were jet-powered.

Thus, the Kremlin’s statement simultaneously confirms the continuation of Russian strikes on the Ukrainian capital and the current lack of visible progress toward negotiations to end the war.
