GTA VI overloaded Netflix: service's web audience jumped more than 125%

The unreleased Grand Theft Auto VI demonstrated a scale usually associated with major movie premieres and sports broadcasts. During the exclusive showing of the new 27-minute game preview on Netflix, the service's web audience in the US grew by more than 125%, and mobile app usage by almost 50%.

At the same time, users began reporting problems with access and video playback. The glitch was brief, and Netflix did not officially link it to GTA VI, but the surge in reports coincided with the start of the broadcast.

The main unusual aspect of the event is not even the technical problems. Rockstar for the first time turned the showing of a new video game into a format more like a world movie premiere: a scheduled time, an exclusive streaming partner, and a limited window during which the presentation could only be watched on Netflix at first.

Netflix got GTA VI six hours before YouTube

Rockstar Games showed Grand Theft Auto VI: An Extended Look on August 27 at 3:00 PM Eastern Time.

The presentation first appeared exclusively on Netflix. Only six hours later did Rockstar open it on its YouTube channel and the official GTA VI website.

For the gaming industry, this is an unusual model. Major trailers are traditionally released simultaneously on YouTube, Twitch, and social platforms, where access is free.

In the case of GTA VI, the publisher created a true premiere window: those wanting to watch the material immediately had to go to Netflix.

Netflix itself called the collaboration with Rockstar the first partnership of its kind and stated that Grand Theft Auto presentations have already become cultural events in their own right.

What happened to Netflix's audience

Data from analytics company Sensor Tower shows the scale of interest.

In the US during the hour of the premiere:

  • the number of Netflix mobile app users was almost 50% higher than the average for the same hour on the previous 12 Thursdays;
  • web audience grew by more than 125% relative to the same average;
  • compared to the previous hour, Netflix usage increased by about 35%;
  • compared to the same time the previous day, growth was about 50%.

That is, the new content brought to the service an audience that might not have opened Netflix at that time on a typical Thursday.

This is especially interesting from a business perspective: GTA VI became not just content for Netflix, but also a way to bring back inactive users and attract people who usually see the service solely as a platform for movies and series.

Why some users couldn't watch the premiere immediately

At the moment the broadcast began, reports appeared of Netflix loading errors on computers, smartphones, and TVs.

Availability monitoring services recorded a sharp increase in complaints around the same time the GTA VI presentation started.

According to StatusGator, issues with the accessibility of the app and website lasted about 44 minutes, although Netflix did not declare an official global incident.

Therefore, it is more accurate to speak not of a confirmed Netflix "server crash due to GTA," but of a brief outage that coincided with an unprecedented audience surge around the premiere.

Why an ordinary trailer became an event of this scale

GTA VI arrives 13 years after Grand Theft Auto V — one of the most commercially successful games in history.

According to the latest data from Take-Two Interactive, GTA V has sold over 230 million copies. The entire Grand Theft Auto series is approaching 475 million sold units.

This means the potential audience for the sequel is not limited to the traditional gaming community.

Grand Theft Auto has long become a mass entertainment brand, comparable in recognition to the biggest film franchises.

That is why Rockstar was able to run the presentation by Hollywood rules: not just release another video, but set a time for a world premiere and sell the viewer the feeling that missing the first minutes means being left out of the day's main event.

What Rockstar showed

The presentation lasted about 27 minutes and, according to Rockstar, was created entirely from footage recorded directly in the game on PlayStation 5.

The video showed Vice City and the surrounding state of Leonida, main characters Jason and Lucia, chases, shootouts, cars, nightlife, and a large number of secondary characters.

The presentation looked unusually cinematic. It was built not as a technical demonstration of graphics or a list of new gameplay mechanics, but rather as a long episode of a crime drama.

And this boundary between a game and on-screen entertainment is becoming less and less noticeable.

Netflix also benefits from GTA

For Netflix, participation in the premiere shows a shift in the company's strategy.

For several years, the service tried to build its own major gaming division, but later scaled back some of its ambitions in expensive AAA projects.

Now a different model emerges: Netflix can use games not necessarily as a product it must develop itself, but as content and an event capable of bringing people to the platform.

The company already has ties with Rockstar. Mobile versions of Grand Theft Auto: The Trilogy and Red Dead Redemption were previously distributed through Netflix Games.

But GTA VI took the collaboration to a new level: for the first time, one of the most anticipated games of the year used Netflix as the main platform for its global presentation.

Interest even reflected in Take-Two shares

The financial market also reacted to the new showing.

After the presentation, shares of Rockstar's parent company — Take-Two Interactive — rose by about 2.6%. Analysts link investor interest to expectations of an extremely strong GTA VI launch.

Take-Two forecasts a record financial year for the company and expects net bookings in the range of $8–8.2 billion. One of the main drivers should be the release of the new Grand Theft Auto.

When GTA VI will be released

Rockstar confirms that Grand Theft Auto VI will be released on November 19, 2026 for PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S.

Less than three months remain before release, but the game is already affecting several markets simultaneously — gaming, streaming, advertising, and stock.

The story with Netflix also shows a broader shift in the entertainment industry. The boundary between a movie premiere, a series launch, and a video game presentation is gradually disappearing.

For the biggest gaming franchises, a new trailer can already be a standalone media event, able to assign the audience a viewing time, bring them to someone else's platform, and create the kind of load that services face during major live broadcasts.

And GTA VI hasn't even been released yet.
