Trump promised a "harsh" response to Iran after strike on US bases
US President Donald Trump said that Washington will launch a retaliatory strike on Iran after Iranian ballistic missiles were fired at American forces in Jordan.
Trump said this in a phone comment to Fox News chief international correspondent Trey Yingst on Monday, August 31.
"We will hit them hard. There will be a response," the American president said.
According to Fox News, citing an American source, Iran fired at least eight ballistic missiles at American forces in Jordan. No significant consequences of the attack were recorded.
Trump said that most of the missiles were intercepted. According to him, American forces deliberately allowed one missile to pass through air defense because its trajectory showed that it would not hit any object.
The Iranian attack was a response to US strikes on two launchers of the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps on Larak Island in the Strait of Hormuz.
US Central Command reported that the operation was limited in nature. According to the American version, Iranian forces were preparing to use missiles to lay new naval mines in the Strait of Hormuz, which posed an immediate threat to commercial shipping.
The US strikes on Larak were the first known use of American forces against targets on Iranian territory since late July. After that, Tehran attacked American facilities in Jordan, resuming a direct exchange of strikes after several weeks of relative calm.
Despite promising to respond militarily, Trump did not rule out the possibility of negotiations with Tehran. According to him, the Iranian side is seeking a meeting, but he doubts that a reliable agreement can be reached with Iran.
The American president also said that sanctions imposed on Iran are putting increasing pressure on the country's economy.
Against the backdrop of a new escalation in the US-Iran standoff, oil prices rose. The resumption of strikes heightened concerns about supplies through the Strait of Hormuz — one of the key routes for global oil and liquefied natural gas trade.
