Zelensky: Putin is not ready to end the war, but diplomacy may work

President Volodymyr Zelensky stated that Russian leader Vladimir Putin has not yet shown any intention of ending the war against Ukraine. At the same time, Kyiv sees opportunities for significant advancement in the diplomatic process.

Zelensky reported this on August 31 on Telegram.

According to the president, the actions of the Russian side so far do not give grounds to speak about Moscow's readiness to independently move toward ending the war. Therefore, Ukraine will continue to simultaneously strengthen its positions and work with international partners.

At the same time, Zelensky noted that important achievements in the peace process are possible on the diplomatic front. The head of state has not yet disclosed the specific solutions or agreements being discussed.

The statement came amid intensified contacts between Ukraine and the United States on ending the war. Earlier on Monday, Zelensky reported a "constructive" phone conversation with representatives of US President Donald Trump, Steve Witkoff and Jared Kushner.

During this conversation, the parties discussed further diplomatic steps. In particular, it concerned a possible visit by Witkoff and Kushner to Ukraine. The exact dates of the potential trip have not yet been announced.

Earlier, Zelensky also said that the Ukrainian team is preparing new communication with representatives of the American president. According to him, Kyiv is striving to do everything possible so that the continuation of the war does not remain the only option for the development of events.

However, no agreement has yet been reported with Russia on a ceasefire or a new round of direct negotiations. Zelensky's statement points to the continuation of diplomatic work, but its possible results still need to be agreed upon by the parties.
