Bail for Mudra has still not been posted: lawyers explain why
Full bail for the former deputy head of the Presidential Office Iryna Mudra has still not been posted. Her defense claims that potential bail guarantors are afraid of financial inspections and possible pressure.
This was announced by Mudra's lawyers on September 1 during the consideration of an appeal against the pre-trial restriction chosen for her, reports the TV channel "We are Ukraine".
The HACC on August 25 sent Mudra into custody with the possibility of posting 20 million hryvnias bail. The defense appealed this decision and requests to change the pre-trial restriction, including reducing the bail amount.
According to the lawyers, it turned out to be difficult to find people willing to post the required amount, not only because of its size. Potential bail guarantors, as the defense claims, are afraid of subsequent origin-of-funds checks and increased attention to their finances.
Lawyer Artem Krykun-Trush said that such fears arise even among people who have legally obtained funds. The defense connects this with the resonance of the case and possible checks after posting a large amount for a suspect.
According to the lawyers, by September 1 only 666 hryvnias of the court-prescribed 20 million hryvnias had actually been posted for Mudra. The money was transferred by a person unknown to the defense.
Mudra is a suspect in the NABU and SAPO operation "Forrest Gump". According to investigators, a detected criminal organization was engaged in seizing expensive real estate and other assets of legal entities through interference with information systems, forged court decisions, and documents. NABU emphasizes that the suspects' guilt can be established only by a guilty verdict of the court.
The Appeals Chamber of the HACC began considering the defense's appeal on September 1. The hearing will continue on September 2, and until the court decision and posting of the prescribed bail, the former official remains in custody.
