Zelensky announced new laws against fraudulent call centers

President of Ukraine Volodymyr Zelensky on the morning of September 2 will submit to the Verkhovna Rada bills providing for increased criminal liability for organizers of fraudulent call centers.

The head of state announced this in his evening address on September 1.

"Tomorrow morning I will submit to the Verkhovna Rada bills on strengthening criminal liability for those who organize fraudulent call centers. We need to close this topic," Zelensky said.

According to the president, law enforcement agencies are already taking necessary actions against such structures, but for systemic fight against them it is also necessary to change the legislation.

Zelensky emphasized that responsibility should be borne specifically by the organizers of fraudulent call centers. At the same time, the president has not yet disclosed specific changes to the Criminal Code, the size of penalties and other provisions of the future bills. They will become known after the documents are registered in parliament.

In Ukraine, the problem of fraudulent call centers has repeatedly become the subject of law enforcement investigations in recent years. Such structures use phone calls and electronic means of communication to gain access to bank data and citizens' money, and also apply social engineering schemes.

Earlier, the Verkhovna Rada had already considered changes aimed at combating electronic communication fraud. In particular, it was proposed to separately establish responsibility for the creation and leadership of fraudulent organizations and participation in their activities. New presidential initiatives should strengthen existing mechanisms of responsibility.
