Hungary to continue providing protection to Ukrainians of conscription age

The Government of Hungary reserves the right to provide protection to persons of conscription age fleeing from Ukraine to Hungary. The Prime Minister of Hungary, Peter Magyar, announced this government decision on Wednesday, according to Європейська правда.

He recalled that a few weeks ago the European Union decided not to grant temporary protection to Ukrainian men of conscription age if they have problems with their military registration documents. According to Magyar, Hungary voted against this measure.

"At the same time, yesterday the government decided that Hungary will act differently and henceforth reserves the right to grant refugee status also to men of conscription age fleeing into the territory of Hungary", he said.

Magyar clarified that this primarily concerns ethnic Hungarians from Zakarpattia.

"Obviously, first of all, taking into account our Zakarpattia Hungarian compatriots, such refugees are becoming more and more numerous, and, I will say honestly, personally I, and I said this, perhaps, yesterday both to the President of the European Council and to several EU leaders, consider it unworthy and incomprehensible that the European Union decided, in essence, to lock fathers and grandfathers in a country at war and does not provide them with assistance, although until now the rules were different", the Hungarian Prime Minister stated.

According to him, such actions are unworthy.

Recall that at the end of July the European Union extended temporary protection for Ukrainians until March 4, 2028, with a new provision that newly arrived Ukrainian citizens liable for military service can apply for the status only if there are no problems with their military registration documents.

The Swiss authorities extended support measures until March 4, 2028 for persons fleeing the war in Ukraine, but with restrictions.

In the Czech Republic, it was reported that last year, for the first time, more Ukrainian men than women received temporary protection in the country.
