Kyiv detains suspect in assassination attempt on director of reproductive clinic

Kyiv police detained a 40-year-old serviceman who is in unauthorized absence from his unit (UAO), suspected of attempting to assassinate a 71-year-old director of a capital reproductive clinic. According to the investigation, the man fired at least 23 shots at the victim.

This was reported by the chief of Kyiv police Dmytro Shumeiko.

The attempt occurred on September 3, around 10:00 a.m., near the entrance to the medical facility in the Sviatoshynskyi district of the capital. According to police, the attacker waited until the clinic director got out of the car, then opened fire.

When the man fell, the shooter approached him and continued shooting. In total, law enforcement counted at least 23 shots. After that, the attacker fled, believing the victim was dead.

Despite numerous gunshot wounds, the 71-year-old survived. He is in intensive care.

Suspect found in acquaintance's apartment

Immediately after the attack, capital police launched a special operation to search for the armed man. Additional Kyiv police forces and KORD special unit fighters were involved.

According to Shumeiko, law enforcement identified the alleged shooter and detained him in the Shevchenkivskyi district of Kyiv, where he was hiding in an acquaintance's apartment.

The detainee is a 40-year-old native of Poltava region, a serviceman in UAO. During a search, firearms were seized. Law enforcement is determining whether it was used in the attack.

Police reported preliminary motive

According to a preliminary version of the investigation, the cause of the attack could be a conflict related to the treatment of the detainee's wife at this clinic.

Law enforcement continues to establish all circumstances of the incident and the final motive for the crime.

The man was notified of suspicion of attempted premeditated murder. The sanction of the incriminated article provides for punishment up to life imprisonment.
