Vučić announced early elections in Serbia and is preparing to dissolve parliament

Early parliamentary elections in Serbia will take place on October 25, 2026. The country's President Aleksandar Vučić announced that on September 9 he will officially dissolve the National Assembly and call the vote.

Vučić said this on the Serbian state television channel RTS, reports N1.

According to the president, on Wednesday, September 9, at exactly 12:00, he will announce two decisions that he must make in accordance with the Constitution and the law on the president of Serbia.

The first will be a decree dissolving the National Assembly, and the second — a decision to hold early parliamentary elections.

«Elections in Serbia will be held on October 25», — said Vučić.

He specified that the election campaign will last 46 days. Vučić also said that he will accept the results of the vote regardless of the outcome and will congratulate his political opponents if they win.

Vučić previously chose between two dates

Back on August 20, the Serbian president said that early parliamentary elections could be held on October 18 or 25, and the final voting day would be determined later. Now the choice has been made in favor of October 25.

According to Serbian law, parliamentary elections are called by the president. Between the day they are officially called and the vote, there must be at least 45 and no more than 60 days. In the case of early elections, the president simultaneously dissolves parliament.

The upcoming campaign will be another early parliamentary campaign in Serbia. Since the Serbian Progressive Party came to power in 2012, early parliamentary elections in the country were held in 2014, 2016, 2022 and 2023.

Vučić will lead the electoral list

The Main Committee of the ruling Serbian Progressive Party earlier decided that Vučić will be the first on the electoral list "United Serbia" in the upcoming elections.

In addition, the party decided to nominate Vučić as a candidate for the post of prime minister if this political force wins the elections, reports N1.
