Two injured in train attack in Sumy region die in hospital

Two women who were seriously injured in a Russian drone attack on a passenger train in Sumy district on September 8 died in hospital. The victims were 60 and 79 years old, and two more injured remain in serious condition.

This was reported by the head of the Sumy Regional Military Administration, Oleh Hryhorov.

According to him, doctors fought for the lives of both women, but they could not be saved.

The attack targeted a suburban passenger train traveling from Viry to Liubotyn. According to the Sumy Regional Prosecutor's Office, on September 8, from 10:51 to 12:21, Russian forces attacked the diesel locomotive and the train at an intermediate railway station in Sumy district. Preliminary information indicates that three drones were used in the strike.

As a result of the hits, the locomotive and one of the passenger cars caught fire. While rescuers were extinguishing the fire and moving the injured to ambulances, Russian forces launched a second strike. There were no casualties among State Emergency Service personnel.

According to updated police data, 12 people were injured as a result of the train attack: five men aged 19 to 78 and seven women aged 60 to 82. Among the injured were the women aged 60 and 79, whose deaths became known on September 9.

Rescuers and local authorities evacuated 19 passengers from the attack area. An armored vehicle of the State Emergency Service and a local government bus were used for their transportation.

Law enforcement officers are investigating the attack as a violation of the laws and customs of war under Part 1 of Article 438 of the Criminal Code of Ukraine. The investigation is being conducted by the Security Service of Ukraine in Sumy region under the procedural guidance of the regional prosecutor's office.

This was not the only Russian attack on passenger trains in Sumy region on September 8. Earlier in the morning, drones struck the "Kyiv – Sumy" train. It had been stopped in advance following a warning from the Ukrzaliznytsia monitoring team, and passengers and railway workers were evacuated before the strike. Rescuers evacuated 90 people, and there were no injuries.
