Ukraine struck the Novy Urengoy Gas Condensate Treatment Plant, Fire Point claimed a range of 3,300 km

Ukrainian drones struck the Novy Urengoy Gas Condensate Treatment Plant in the Yamalo-Nenets Autonomous District of Russia on September 9. After the attack, a fire broke out at the facility. Fire Point reported achieving a range of 3,300 km with a successful hit on a target in Novy Urengoy.

The attack was reported by the monitoring Telegram channel Exilenova+. Russian authorities confirmed a fire at a fuel and energy facility in Novy Urengoy, but claimed it was caused by falling drone debris.

According to Exilenova+, the target was the Novy Urengoy Gas Condensate Treatment Plant. After the strike, a fire started at the facility, and a pressure release in the system was also reported.

Following the attack, Ukrainian defense company Fire Point published a statement about the new 3,300 km range indicator and the successful hit on the target in Novy Urengoy. The company produces long-range strike drones FP-1 and FP-2.

The Russian side acknowledged the attack on the region. Governor of the Yamalo-Nenets Autonomous District Dmitry Artyukhov said that a drone had attacked one of the industrial facilities in Novy Urengoy. According to his version, the UAV was shot down, and the fire occurred after debris fell. There were no casualties, according to the governor, and the extent of damage is being determined.

Presidential Plenipotentiary Envoy to the Ural Federal District Artyom Zhoga clarified that it concerned a fuel and energy facility. According to him, the plant's personnel had been evacuated in advance. This is the first attack by Ukrainian drones on the Arctic part of the Ural Federal District confirmed by Russian authorities.

The Novy Urengoy Gas Condensate Treatment Plant belongs to Gazprom Pererabotka, part of the Gazprom Group. The facility plays an important role in processing liquid hydrocarbons extracted from the fields of the Yamalo-Nenets Autonomous District.

The plant receives unstable gas condensate mixture from Urengoyskoye, Yamburgskoye, Zapolyarnoye and other fields of the Nadym-Pur-Taz region. At the plant, the condensate undergoes treatment and deethanization before further transportation and processing.

The design capacity of the plant is about 19.5 million tons of raw material per year. The Novy Urengoy Gas Condensate Treatment Plant is technologically connected to the Surgut Condensate Stabilization Plant: a significant part of the treated raw material is sent there via the Urengoy–Surgut condensate pipeline. The plant itself also produces motor fuel and liquefied petroleum gases.

The importance of the facility was evident during previous accidents. In August 2021, a major fire at the Novy Urengoy Gas Condensate Treatment Plant severely damaged the condensate deethanization unit. The plant's operations were disrupted, affecting raw material supplies and the liquefied petroleum gas market. Later, the damaged unit was decided to be replaced with a new one.

The current attack became one of the farthest Ukrainian operations against Russian fuel and energy infrastructure. Novy Urengoy is located more than 2,800 km from Ukrainian territory in a straight line, while Fire Point claimed its weapon covered a distance of 3,300 km.

The Yamalo-Nenets Autonomous District accounts for the bulk of Russian natural gas production, and Novy Urengoy is one of the key centers of the Russian gas industry. Until September 9, Russian authorities had not reported successful attacks by Ukrainian drones on industrial facilities in this region.

At the moment, the exact nature of the damage to the Novy Urengoy Gas Condensate Treatment Plant and the possible impact of the attack on its production capacity have not been officially determined.
