Zelensky discussed creation of FREYJA anti-ballistic system with defense companies
President Volodymyr Zelensky and Prime Minister of Norway Jonas Gahr Støre held a meeting in Oslo with leaders of the largest defense companies of partner countries. The main topic was the implementation of the joint FREYJA anti-ballistic program, which should strengthen the protection of Ukraine and Europe from missile threats.
The meeting was attended by leaders of Fire Point, Kongsberg, Weibel, Saab, Diehl Defence, Hensoldt, Thales, Safran, Sener and Leonardo. From the Norwegian side, the ministers of defense, foreign affairs and finance were also present.
The Ukrainian side presented the participants with the results of work on FREYJA achieved to date. The parties also coordinated the next steps necessary for the implementation of the program.
Zelensky noted that the project should combine European technological and production capabilities with Ukrainian experience in countering Russian missile attacks.
FREYJA envisages the creation of an integrated system for countering ballistic and other air threats. In July, the participants of the initiative signed a Joint Declaration on the establishment of an Integrated Anti-Ballistic Coalition.
Its founders were Ukraine, Denmark, France, Germany, Italy, the Netherlands, Norway, Spain, Sweden and the United Kingdom. The coalition remains open to other countries joining.
The first meeting on the implementation of FREYJA took place on July 13 in Paris. At that discussion, heads of state and government, ministers of defense, national security advisers and representatives of international defense companies participated.
According to Zelensky, the program may in the future become a common European system that will allow creating integrated protection against ballistic missiles. The President previously set the task of obtaining concrete results of the project at the turn of 2026–2027.
The FREYJA issue was also discussed during a separate meeting between Zelensky and Støre in Oslo. In addition to the joint anti-ballistic program, the parties talked about strengthening Ukraine's air defense and Ukraine's need for interceptor missiles, primarily for Patriot systems.
Ukraine counts on Norway's support in this matter, including through the PURL mechanism. The parties also discussed preparing Ukraine's energy sector for winter and the possibility of additional assistance from Oslo.
