US President Donald Trump said that Russian President Vladimir Putin, in his opinion, wants to reach an agreement to end the war against Ukraine. The American president also positively assessed their latest phone conversation.

Trump said this to journalists on September 9 before flying to Dallas for the Republican Party convention.

"We had a great conversation with Putin. He wants to make a deal", – the US president said.

At the same time, Trump again linked the prospects for agreements with the position of Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy.

"If Zelenskyy wants to make a deal, that would be very good", – he stated.

Trump did not specify on what basis he concluded that Putin is ready to negotiate, nor did he report any new concessions from Moscow or agreed terms for a possible end to the war.

The phone conversation between Trump and Putin took place on Tuesday, September 8. The American president called it "great". The contact occurred shortly after a new round of American diplomacy around the war in Ukraine.

In particular, US President's special envoy Steve Witkoff and Jared Kushner previously visited Moscow and Kyiv. In the Russian capital, they held negotiations with Putin for several hours, after which they met with Zelenskyy in Ukraine.

American representatives discussed possible proposals that could bring the end of the war closer. However, following their trips, no specific agreement or breakthrough was publicly reported.

Zelenskyy himself said on September 8 that Witkoff and Kushner presented several "worthy ideas" during the negotiations. The content of the proposals has not yet been disclosed by the parties. The President of Ukraine also said he expects to meet with Trump later in September.

Despite the optimistic assessment of the American president, representatives of the intelligence structures of the US, Ukraine and a number of European states still doubt that Putin really intends to end the war, Reuters notes.

Earlier, Trump said he was ready to personally meet with Putin again, but would like to hold such a summit at a stage when the parties are ready to directly discuss an agreement on ending the war.
