Apple Raises Prices on Older iPhones After Unveiling New Lineup

After introducing its new generation of smartphones, Apple unexpectedly raised prices on several previous iPhone models in Europe. In Germany, the iPhone 16, iPhone 17, and iPhone 17e each became €150 more expensive, while the base iPhone Air went up by €100.

The price change was noticed by the Austrian newspaper Der Standard. The new prices appeared in European Apple online stores after the presentation of the iPhone 18 Pro, iPhone 18 Pro Max, and the foldable iPhone Duo on September 9.

The relatively affordable models that Apple kept on sale after the lineup refresh saw particularly noticeable increases.

• iPhone 16, 128 GB — €999 instead of €849;
• iPhone 17, 256 GB — €1099 instead of €949;
• iPhone 17e, 256 GB — €849 instead of €699;
• iPhone Air, 256 GB — €1299 instead of €1199.

Thus, the iPhone 16, which cost from €849 in Germany before the new lineup presentation, became about 18% more expensive. The iPhone 17 and iPhone 17e rose in price by roughly 16% and 21%, respectively.

Versions with larger storage also became more expensive. For example, the iPhone 17 with 512 GB now costs €1349, and the iPhone 17e with 512 GB — €1099.

The most significant increase among individual configurations is seen with the iPhone Air. The base version went up by €100, but the price of the model with 1 TB of storage rose from €1699 to €2049 — an increase of €350.

At the same time, prices differ slightly depending on the EU country due to taxes and other national market specifics. For example, in the Austrian Apple store, the iPhone 17e is now offered from €859, while in Germany — from €849. Other base models may also cost somewhat differently.

The increase looks atypical for Apple: after the release of a new generation, the company usually either lowers the price of older devices or keeps it at the same level. This time, smartphones from previous generations became more expensive simultaneously with the lineup refresh.

A similar change occurred in the United States. There, Apple also raised prices on remaining previous models by about $100.

As a result, the difference between some old and new devices has noticeably narrowed. For example, the iPhone 17 now costs from €1099 in Germany, while the new iPhone 18 Pro, presented on September 9, starts at €1449.

Apple has not officially explained the reasons for raising prices on previous generations of smartphones.
