Bitcoin breaks $85K: bears swept from the market

Bitcoin continued its rally and on September 21 climbed above $85K, reaching its highest level since January. At one point the price exceeded $85.2K. Just a week ago the cryptocurrency dropped to around $75K — from the local low Bitcoin gained about 13%.

The $85K mark is interesting not only because of another rise. Bitcoin broke out of the range where it spent recent months and set a 33-week high. Last week it also closed around $81.1K — the highest weekly close since early May. (Cointelegraph)

Another technical signal: Bitcoin for the first time in about 45 weeks closed a week above its 50-week moving average, which is now around $78.8K. For traders, such levels are important primarily as an indicator that the medium-term market structure has changed after a prolonged decline. (Yahoo Finance)

Bears swept from the market

The latest surge from $82K to $85K was particularly sharp due to mass closure of short positions. Over the past 24 hours, more than $750M in positions were liquidated on the crypto market, with around $648M in shorts. Bitcoin alone accounted for about $361M in liquidations. (The Block)

In other words, after breaking previous levels, the market started to move on its own: the rise forced exchanges to close short positions, closing required buying Bitcoin, and these buys pushed the price even higher.

Now the market looks at $86K

After passing $85K, the nearest resistance zone is around $85.2–85.5K, and the next more significant technical level is around $86.2K. If it is broken, the next major resistance area is around $90K. (Investing.com)

However, after an almost vertical rally, the market looks overheated on short time frames. Therefore, breaking $85K does not mean Bitcoin will now march non-stop to $90K.

The main test will be different: whether the cryptocurrency can hold above $84–85K after the short squeeze ends. If yes, the previous ceiling may turn into new support. If not, part of the latest spike may be quickly retraced.

At the same time, the historical high of around $126K, set in October 2025, is still about a third above Bitcoin's current value. (The Block)

So today's news is no longer 'Bitcoin has started rising again', but 'Bitcoin reached a new eight-month price level — and now the market is testing whether it can hold there'.
