Zelensky hopes to end war before winter with Trump's support

President of Ukraine Volodymyr Zelensky expressed hope that the full-scale war can be ended before winter with the assistance of U.S. President Donald Trump.

Zelensky made the statement on September 22 during a meeting with the American leader on the sidelines of the 81st session of the UN General Assembly in New York.

The Ukrainian president emphasized the role of the United States and Trump personally in attempts to resume the negotiation process and said he counts on American support to reach agreements in the coming months.

The statement was made amid intensifying diplomatic contacts between Kyiv and Washington. Even before the meeting, Zelensky said the peace track remains Ukraine's top priority and that the sides have prepared proposals on de-escalation and key security issues.

In particular, Kyiv planned to discuss the cessation of mutual strikes on energy infrastructure and other steps that could become the beginning of a broader negotiation process. At the same time, the Ukrainian side emphasizes that such measures must be mutual.

On the same day, Trump, speaking at the UN General Assembly, said the United States continues to work with Ukraine and Russia to end the war. According to him, he believes a result can be achieved faster than many expect. The American president also reminded about new sanctions powers against Russia and said he is ready to use them if necessary.

Before negotiations with Trump, Zelensky also discussed with American senators the strengthening of sanctions pressure on Russia, supplies of interceptors for air defense systems, and Ukraine's preparation for winter. The president noted that increasing the number of missile defense capabilities can reduce Russia's ability to continue strikes and prolong the war.

At the same time, specific agreements on the timing of the war's end based on the public part of the meeting have not yet been announced. Zelensky's statement about the possibility of ending the war before winter is an expression of the Ukrainian president's hope, not a timeframe agreed upon by the parties.
