US hopes Putin will attend G20 summit in Miami

US Secretary of State Marco Rubio expressed hope that Russian President Vladimir Putin will attend the G20 leaders' summit, which will take place in Miami in December this year, according to Європейська правда.

He said this in a conversation with journalists in New York.

Rubio, commenting on the possibility of a bilateral meeting between US President Donald Trump and the Kremlin leader, noted that the American side invited Putin to attend the Group of Twenty summit in Florida.

"That's why we invited President Putin to this meeting. We believe it's an opportunity for him to engage not only with the president but with other world leaders as well. We hope he accepts that invitation", – the Secretary of State said.

Rubio added that it "would be good" if Trump and Putin met in Miami.

"They've already spoken on the phone multiple times. I don't know the exact number, but since the president took office, I believe they've communicated at least ten times. So yes, we remain open to dialogue", – the official added.

At the same time, he noted that such a meeting should have a specific purpose and outcome.

"Of course, the ideal scenario would be a meeting that produces a concrete result. And that largely means a lot of work needs to be done beforehand. But if not, then perhaps if President Putin attends the Group of Twenty summit in December, it will undoubtedly be an occasion for them to talk and discuss issues", – Rubio stated.

The US Secretary of State noted that "to solve problems, you need to meet with those you disagree with, or those with whom there may be certain contradictions in relations."

According to Bloomberg, Putin is likely to skip the G20 summit in the US involving President Donald Trump.

Recently it became known that Vladimir Putin rejected the proposal of Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy to hold ceasefire negotiations within the Group of Twenty summit in the United States.

Trump himself said he did not know whether Putin would agree to a trilateral meeting with Zelenskyy in Miami.
