50 countries and the EU called on Russia for a ceasefire, the US did not join

50 countries and the European Union issued a joint statement at the UN in support of Ukraine, calling on Russia for a ceasefire; the United States did not join this statement, according to Європейська правда.

The text of the statement, provided to journalists by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, was released ahead of the UN Security Council meeting on September 23.

The signatories expressed solidarity with Ukraine and deep concern over the escalation of Russia's actions against civilians and civilian infrastructure throughout Ukraine.

They expressed concern about attacks in the Black Sea and supported efforts to conclude an agreement in the Black Sea to ensure freedom of navigation.

The statement also recalls that since March 2025, Ukraine has agreed to a full, immediate and unconditional ceasefire.

"We call on Russia to finally do the same – this is a necessary step towards constructive diplomacy and negotiations leading to peace", – the statement reads.

Furthermore, the signatories called on Russia to ensure the immediate return to Ukraine of all arbitrarily detained, forcibly transferred or deported Ukrainian civilians, in particular children, as well as the full return of all prisoners of war and all interned persons as important confidence-building measures.

"Ukraine strives for peace. We strive for peace. Russia must end its aggression, agree to a ceasefire, and constructively join negotiations to achieve a comprehensive, just and durable peace in accordance with international law", – the statement says.

The statement was supported by 50 countries and the European Union. Among the signatory countries, the United States of America, which plays a mediating role in the negotiations between Ukraine and Russia, is absent.

The countries that supported the statement are: Ukraine, Albania, Andorra, Australia, Austria, Belgium, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Bulgaria, Canada, Costa Rica, Croatia, Cyprus, Czechia, Denmark, Estonia, Finland, France, Georgia, Germany, Greece, Honduras, Hungary, Iceland, Ireland, Israel, Italy, Japan, Latvia, Liechtenstein, Lithuania, Luxembourg, Malta, Monaco, Montenegro, the Netherlands, New Zealand, North Macedonia, Norway, Poland, Portugal, Republic of Korea, Republic of Moldova, Romania, San Marino, Slovakia, Slovenia, Spain, Sweden, Switzerland and the United Kingdom.

Recall that the 81st session of the UN General Assembly is taking place in New York. A speech by the President of Ukraine Volodymyr Zelenskyy is expected on Wednesday.

On the eve, US President Donald Trump called on Russian leader Vladimir Putin to end the war against Ukraine.
