EU to impose sanctions against candidates for the Russian State Duma in the occupied territories of Ukraine

The European External Action Service (EEAS) presented on Wednesday, September 23, at a meeting of the EU Committee of Permanent Representatives (Coreper) a draft new sanctions list against candidates in the 2026 Russian State Duma elections who ran in the temporarily occupied territories of Ukraine. This became known from diplomatic sources in the EU, according to Європейська правда.

The European Union is preparing to add 77 candidates for the Russian State Duma elections to its sanctions lists.

"Today at Coreper, the European External Action Service presented a new draft list under the sanctions regime regarding the territorial integrity of Ukraine, consisting of 77 candidates who ran in the Russia-occupied territories of Ukraine," – a source told "EuroPravda".

After the presentation, technical preparation of the list for approval will begin, and the next time the ambassadors of EU member states in Brussels will return to its consideration in early October.

Approval of the new sanctions list is planned for the EU Foreign Affairs Council meeting on October 12.

As "European Pravda" reported, on the eve the EU extended restrictive measures against persons responsible for undermining or threatening the territorial integrity, sovereignty and independence of Ukraine for another 36 months, but removed Russian oligarchs Alisher Usmanov and Mikhail Fridman from the list.

Recall that on September 16, the European Commission presented a new proposal for a new package of individual sanctions against the Russian military-industrial complex with 1576 listings.
