Strikes on telecom infrastructure increase pressure on providers: companies forecast a significant rise in prices
The Ukrainian data center that housed the facilities of hosting provider MiroHost has been destroyed as a result of a Russian attack. The company currently cannot specify the timeframe for restoring the operation of Ukrainian infrastructure.
MiroHost founder and head of Internet Invest Oleksandr Olshansky told dev.ua.
According to him, the consequences of the attack concern specifically the Ukrainian part of the provider's infrastructure. At the same time, about 95% of MiroHost clients use facilities located outside Ukraine, so services for them continue to operate normally.
The company does not yet forecast when the operation of Ukrainian facilities will be restored.
The damage to the data center is part of broader problems in the telecommunications infrastructure following Russian attacks. The electronic communications regulator warned of possible temporary disruptions in network operation and access to communication services due to infrastructure damage. Later, they reported that providers are gradually completing emergency restoration works.
Problems also arose at provider Etherlink, which serves, among others, the central part of Kyiv. As dev.ua reported, the company's main network node was damaged. The provider plans to relocate the network core to another location and expects restoration of services by September 25.
Earlier it was reported that after the Russian attack, network problems also occurred at providers "Pavutyna", UTELS, KyivLink, and Crazy Network.
According to the Ministry of Digital Transformation, nearly 100 thousand households in Kyiv and the region experienced internet access disruptions after the attack.
Against the backdrop of damage to the telecommunications infrastructure, the owner of Kyiv provider UTELS Oleksandr Poliudov predicts a further increase in the cost of home internet. According to him, operators who invest in backup power and duplication of communication channels find it increasingly difficult to maintain tariffs at the current level.
"Providers who ensure network stability, power backup and backup communication channels cannot continue to provide internet at 300-350 UAH. There will be a significant price increase", - stated Poliudov in a comment to dev.ua.
He also believes that operators who do not invest in network resilience and continue to operate with low tariffs may gradually leave the market. In that case, subscribers may find it harder to quickly switch to a provider with more protected infrastructure due to increased connection queues.
At the same time, it is a forecast by one market participant, not an announced general tariff increase by all Ukrainian providers.
